A new regular Containerships service at the Port of Gdansk19.03.2007 The Port of Gdansk has acquired a new short sea shipping service. Two popular container lines with many years of cooperation with the Port of Gdansk i.e. Kursiu Linija of Lithuania and Containerships of Finland have changed the owner. Towards the end of the last year, the Icelandic company of Eimskip, which acquired the majority interest in Containerships, was named the new owner of Kursiu Linija. The new owner - one of the leading European shipowners operating in short sea shipping - has decided to consolidate the services of Kursiu and Containerships under the common name of Containerships Ltd Oy.
As a result of the services consolidation, Containerships has become Europe's major shipowner operating in short sea shipping and offering specialist door-to-door deliveries. It maintains a fleet of 11 vessels and over 10,000 containers including highly specialized container equipment suited for the transport of europallets.
As of 15 March, this shipowner launched a new container service on the route Liepaja - Klaipeda - Gdansk - Immingham - Rotterdam operating on a once-weekly basis. The service is operated by the ship mv Spica with a total of 151 metres in length, GT 7550, NT 3957, DWT 8932 and the carrying capacity of 749 TEU. Thereby the Gdansk Container Terminal has acquired yet another connection operated by Containerships. It now provides three ship calls to Gdansk on a once-weekly basis as part of the following services: - St. Petersburg - Klaipeda - Gdansk - Södertälje - Helsinki
- St. Petersburg - Helsinki - Gdansk - Teesport - Rotterdam
