An unusual cargo at the Port of Gdansk

22.10.2010

An extraordinary cargo handling operation was held on 20th October of this year at the Przemyslowe Quay of the Port of Gdansk. On board of the 70-metre long and nearly 25-metre wide pontoon "VIIRU", which was built in 1993 by a shipyard in Singapore, three metal tanks were shipped in for the purposes of the Gdansk Phoshpatic Fertilizers Plant FOSFORY. Two of the tanks, with a capacity of 8,000 cubic metres each, have a 27-metre diameter and are 15 metres high. Their weight is 160 tonnes each. The third tank, which is slightly smaller in size, weighs 60 tonnes. The pontoon, which was towed by the towboat "METEOR", additionally brought two dedicated segmented devices which enable loading and unloading of vehicles in Ro-Ro technology. The pontoon was moored perpendicularly to the quay so that the structures founded on tractors by hydraulic ramps could be moved directly onto the shore. This difficult operation was commenced at 1400 hrs and finished at 0330 hrs. The shipment from Helsinki to Gdansk was arranged by the Gdynia-based forwarding company OKMARIT Ltd.
