Booming trends in May at the port quays

12.06.2003

In May this year, the Gdansk stevedores handled 2,374,224 tonnes of different types of cargoes, that is the top cargo handling result in the recent years (the similar volume was recorded in 1999, also in May, when 2,193 thousand tonnes of cargoes had been handled).

As a matter of fact, each of the cargo groups recorded a growth in the handling volume, as compared with the year 2002. Namely, in May this year, a volume of 839,642 tonnes of coal were handled (vs. 728,147 tonnes handled in May last year), 13,832 tonnes of ore (vs. 4,634 tonnes in May 2002), so called other bulk - 190,601 tonnes (vs. 147,301 tonnes in May last year), grain - 16,958 tonnes (vs. last year's 15,560 tonnes), general cargo - 217,423 tonnes (vs. last year's 135,848 tonnes) and fuels - 1,095,768 tonnes (vs. 462,732 tonnes in May 2002). The most substantial quantitative rise was recorded for coal handling (111,496 tonnes), general cargo (81,575 tonnes) and fuels (633,036 tonnes).

Such a great boom on the port quays gives rise for satisfaction, even more so, as this is not merely a one-off incident. In general, over the first five months of this year, volumes for the specific cargo groups are as follows: coal - 2,975,467 tonnes, ore - 39,035 tonnes, bulk - 114,788 tonnes, grain - 82,834 tonnes, general cargo 901,773 tonnes and fuels - 3,766,352 tonnes. A total volume of cargoes handled amounts to 8,890,855 tonnes of different types of commodities (nearly 1.5 million tonnes more as compared with the first five months of the year 2002). It should be stressed that a substantial increase in volume for the other bulk group depended extensively on a major share of the bulk liquid cargoes handled by the Chemiki Co. Ltd., for the general cargo group - steel products, scrap and rise, whereas for fuels - a share of transit oil. We hope to see the booming trends to be further confirmed also in June.
