Good results in June - nearly 11 million tonnes in
the first half-year02.07.2003 June was another successful month at the quays of the Port of Gdansk. The overall handling volume totaled 1,874,370 tonnes of various cargoes, which is 414,892 tonnes more as compared with the previous year. A fall in the handling volume was recorded only in cargo groups such as grain - 21,536 tonnes were handled, while in June 2002, 4,589 tonnes more had been handled, and ore - a 2,190-tonne drop (in June this year 3,270 tonnes were handled). Other cargo groups show a significant growth in handling volumes. The major rise was recorded for fuels - in June this year 842,281 tonnes of fuels were handled i.e. 295,595 tonnes more as compared with the last year's outcome in June. In terms of "other bulk cargoes", in June this year, 232,567 tonnes were handled, that is a 76,337-tonne growth as compared with June in the previous year. Increased rates of cargo handling were also recorded for coal - 596,036 tonnes (vs. 569,471 tonnes in June 2002), and also for general cargo where 178,680 tonnes were handled (23,174 tonnes more as compared to June last year). A good level of handling volumes maintained continuously over the consecutive month resulted in exceeding the outlooks in relation to the time flow indicator. Let us remind you that at the beginning of the year, handling rates envisaged for the year 2003 were forecasted to remain at the level similar to that recorded in the year 2002, which comprised a total result of 17,652 thousand tonnes. Today, at the end of June, the volume of cargoes handled reached 10 756 225 tonnes, which indicates a 1,914,060-tonne growth as compared with the first half-year of 2002. The share proportion of particular cargo groups in a total volume of cargoes handled presents as follows: coal - 3,571,503 tonnes, ore - 42,905 tonnes, other bulk - 1,347,355 tonnes, grain - 104,370 tonnes, general cargo - 1,080,459 tonnes and fuels - 4,608,633 tonnes. - This volume of cargoes coming to the quays of Gdansk allows, as early as now, to estimate that the year will close with a volume of 20 million of cargoes handled - says Marek Czernowski, Chief Dispatcher at the Port of Gdansk. This is mainly due to the increased in-flow of transit oil and also liquid cargoes in the "other bulk" group to the Port of Gdansk resulting from newly established business contacts. Additionally, motor vehicles are worth mentioning. In the first half-year of the previous year the Port Free Zone at the Port of Gdansk had handled 9,063 passenger cars and during the entire year - 17,021 cars, whereas in the first six months of this year the Port Free Zone has already handled 16,623 passenger cars. Our only wish is for such rate of growth in turnover to be maintained until the year-end. |
