Closer to Australia

02.12.2005

Since not long ago, relations between the Port of Gdansk and Australia have drawn closer than ever before. Let us bring to mind that it is thanks to the interest shown by the financial milieu of Australia that the largest investment project in Poland's maritime sector - the construction of a deepwater container terminal is under way in the Northern Port. This came as a result of a takeover, in September 2005, of the majority interest in Deepwater Container Terminal, amounting to some EUR 190 million, by Macquarie Global Infrastructure Fund II - a fund administered by the world leading investor in infrastructure - Macquarie Bank Group (Australia).

As these relations have gained new values, nothing stands in the way of their further development. Such aspirations were reflected in the fact that on December 1 this year, the Port of Gdansk was playing host to a visit by Malgorzata Hill, Head of the Commercial Counsellor's Office at the Australian Embassy in Warsaw. During the meeting with Julian Skelnik, Vice-President of the Board of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA, the main issues were discussed on prospective cooperation between representatives of a wide range of business areas in Australia with the Port of Gdansk. J. Skelnik presented the basic prospects of the port development and emphasized in particular the features that shape its new image different from the stereotypes held in remote Australia.

M. Hill visited also the tower of the Harbour Master's Office that afforded a panoramic view of the Port of Gdansk. M. Hill expressed her firm belief that her visit would contribute to the Port of Gdansk gaining a better recognition across the business milieu of Australia.
