Daily record at the Gdansk Container
Terminal18.05.2005 May 14 2005 on the Szczecinskie Quay proved as busy as never before. That day saw the handling of as many as three container carries ("Meriwa", "OPDR Sewilla" and "Polarwind"), thus resulting in the Szczecinskie Quay having hit the all time high daily number of handled containers - 536 TEU, i.e. 6,038 tonnes of cargo. Large container terminals may regard that volume as not particularly impressive, however, given the assumption that such a daily cargo handling rate be maintained throughout the year - the Gdansk Container Terminal would attain a volume of 180 thou. TEU. This being of course merely a tongue in cheek hypotheses, it is worth mentioning that from the outset of this year until May 14, the Gdansk Container Terminal handled 21,281 TEU, whilst in the corresponding period of 2004 (also a record-breaking year - 41,184 TEU) the Szczecinskie Quay of the Gdansk Container Terminal handled 11,404 TEU. This shows that cargo handling volumes have nearly doubled this year. This success was brought about due to the efficiency of Gdansk stevedores working for the Port of Gdansk Cargo Logistics. Furthermore, this gives yet another evidence for legitimacy of the decision made by the Port of Gdansk Authority SA on substantial expansion and modernisation of the Gdansk Container Terminal. The work was commenced in 2005 and an investment of some PLN 13 million is to be made into the extension of quay up to 367 metres, as well as in the enlargement of the area for containers storage, warehouses and parking spaces. Result of these investment projects, the Gdansk Container Terminal will soon expand its annual throughput capacity to over 100 thou. TEU.
