"Duke of Scandinavia" at the Port of Gdansk03.10.2002 On Thursday October 3, this year, at 10 a.m., a ferry "Duke of Scandinavia" called at Westerplatte Ferry Terminal of the Port of Gdansk to launch a new service line Gdansk-Trelleborg-Copenhagen. The owner of the ferry is DFDS Seaways, a Danish ferry carrier boasting a many-year's tradition and the name recognized all over Europe. The first ever crossing of the DSDF ferry from Szczecin to Copenhagen and Christiania was made as early as 1874, whereas the last voyage between Denmark and Poland took place in 1967. It was not until the year 2002 that a regular service between Gdansk and Copenhagen, with calling at Trelleborg has been re-launched. The new service is operated by "Duke of Scandinavia", a ferry constructed in 1978 with a carrying capacity of 1240 passengers, 416 passenger cars and 45 trailers. Apart from diversified pricing on journey conditions, the DFDS's offer additionally provides for a wide range of onboard entertainment, as well as an attractive itinerary while staying in Copenhagen. The "Duke of Scandinavia" ferry is scheduled to call at Gdansk on the alternate days at 10 a.m. and to leave at 4:30 p.m. It will call at Trelleborg at 6 a.m. the following day and finally arrive in Copenhagen at 10:15 a.m. Thor Johannesen, DFDS's Director, emphasizes that a decision to open the Gdansk-Copenhagen service was made based on research carried out on both the Scandinavian and Polish markets that proved considerable public interest in launching the service. We expect - says Thor Johannesen - that in the year 2003 "Duke of Scandinavia" will have carried about 170 thousand passengers and 8-10 thousand trailers. The overall annual carrying rate of DFDS fleet (6 vessels) operating six sea-going services totals 1.8 million passengers.
