Documents initialed on the A-1 motorway

20.08.2002

On Wednesday August 14 this year representatives of Gdansk Transport Company, Ministry of Infrastructure and General Board of National Roads and Motorways had initialed a contract of concession on the construction of the Gdansk-Grudziadz section of the A-1 motorway. Although the contact had only been initialed and not yet signed, it provides the grounds for Gdansk Transport Company to conclude the financing of the project development. It is expected that the Minister of Infrastructure Marek Pol will sign the contract in two-month time, whereas Gdansk Transport Company wishes to commence the construction work in spring 2003 and complete the development of a 91-kilometer long Gdansk-Grudziadz section by September 2005.

Additionally, talks are currently in progress with reference to the second, Grudziadz-Torun section of the motorway that is due to open a year or a year and a half following the completion of the first section.

Successful accomplishment of this project constitutes one of the key strategic assignments vital in terms of a comprehensive approach towards addressing the issues related to transportation routes, in which the port plays a significant role. Construction of the A-1 North-South motorway (combined with the further investments such as suspension bridge over the Dead Vistula or tunnel passage under the Dead Vistula, as well as providing road connection between the port and the A-1 motorway from Juszkowy junction to Elblaska Street junction) is regarded as the port's gateway to the extended hinterland nationwide and will enable Gdansk to play a strategic role when it comes to the International Transport Corridor no. VI from the Nordic Countries through the Pomeranian Region towards the Balkans.
