Firefighters' Day at the Port of Gdansk22.05.2015 As every year, the Port of Gdansk - on the initiative of the Straz Ochrony Portu Gdansk Sp. z o.o. (the port security) as well as the Portowa Straz Pozarna ''Florian'' Sp. z o.o. (the port fire brigade) - on 21st May 2015 held the Firefighters' Day celebrations at the Operational Basin. The ceremony, like in previous years, was a once-a-year opportunity to honour the most outstanding and selfless firemen, who were awarded commemorative diplomas and medals "For services to Firefighting". "The firefighting profession," announced Jerzy Melaniuk - Vice-President of the Infrastructure Department of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA - in his speech "is extremely stressful, selfless and at the same time responsible work whose basic prerequisite is safety. The Port of Gdansk Authority SA appreciates this arduous and extremely important service for the port and sees the necessity for continued efforts regarding security and safety at the port which, in addition to our team of committed and reliable firefighters, also requires efficient, modern and reliable equipment." Currently, at the Port of Gdansk, so-called dangerous goods - including liquid fuels and coal - account for approximately half of the port's cargo transshipment. It will soon put into operation the first stage of the construction of an oil terminal, including 6 tanks for crude oil, which also will increase the quantity of dangerous goods handled at the port. "We must bear in mind, therefore, that our safety really does depend on the firefighters, equipment and management of this vast port area," said Vice-President Melaniuk. At the end of the ceremony, the guests had the opportunity to watch a water gala of firefighting ships and acquaint themselves with a system which is unique in Northern Poland - the innovative high-pressure Cobra system with a water jet cutting function, able to blast through the hardest materials, even metal, or concrete. This is the most modern fire-fighting equipment, which is at the disposal of our firefighting teams to ensure safety at the port and marine complex which, thanks to the fire prevention measures in place, can confidently be called safe. On behalf of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA on Firefighters' Day, we wish to thank all the firemen for their work to make the port a safe place, and in particular the Straz Ochrony Portu Gdansk Sp. z o.o. (the port security) as well as the Portowa Straz Pozarna ''Florian'' Sp. z o.o. (the port fire brigade) - the organisers of the Firefighters' Day celebrations at the Port of Gdansk. |
