First Chevrolet cars from South Korea in the Port Free Zone

06.03.2006

On March 6 of this year, the Port of Gdansk saw the unloading of the car carrier "Neckar Highway" with 876 passenger vehicles. This was the first car carrier shipping Chevrolet cars (705 vehicles), manufactured by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company Ltd in South Korea. This year, the Port of Gdansk is expecting to handle approx. 40 thou. of these cars. A contract to unload these vehicles from car carriers has been signed by the Port of Gdansk Cargo Logistics Ltd.

Chevrolet cars discharged at the Port of Gdansk will be forwarded to the Passenger Cars Manufacturing Plant FSO SA in Warsaw and transported on to Ukraine. The unloading of the cars will take place in the Port Free Zone and at the Oliwskie Quay where there is sufficient space for storage of a large number of vehicles, and canal depth capable of accommodating the largest vessels entering the Inner Port. At the Oliwskie Quay, the unloading will be carried out directly from car carriers onto the quay platform through side gates, or by means of floating ramps through stern gates.

From the Port of Gdansk, the cars will be hauled to FSO SA where each car will be dismantled into nine parts. The dismantled cars will then be transported to Ukraine. There they will be reassembled and made ready for sale by the Zaporozheye Car Manufacturing Company Avto ZAZ. Chevrolet cars are manufactured in a Korea-based plant of GM DA & TVC Ltd, formerly Daewoo Motor. The plant is currently owned by a consortium of General Motors.
