Logistics and Distribution Centre in the Northern Port

07.01.2005

On 6 January 2005, at the Gdansk City Hall, a trilateral co-operation agreement was signed that pertains to the designing and construction of the logistics and distribution centre in the Northern Port. Signatures were set by: Pawel Adamowicz, City Mayor of Gdansk, James Sutcliffe, President of the Deepwater Container Terminal Gdansk SA, and Andrzej Kasprzak, President of the Board of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA.

Less than a year ago, (on 28 January 2004), representatives of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA and the British investor DCT Gdansk SA had signed a contract whereby the latter, at the expense of some USD 175 million, shall provide the largest in Poland deepwater container terminal. During phase I alone, its handling capacity shall total 500 thou. TEU, with a targeted throughput of 1 million TEU.

The past months have been spent sparing no effort by both, the specialists from the Port of Gdansk Authority and the experts of the British investor, as well as all institutions and municipal and regional services, which enabled making up a set of necessary documentation. Due to the involvement of the City Mayor and the Pomeranian Governor, to mention but a few, the entire scope of preliminary work is under way in keeping with a schedule, which was evidenced by a decision of the Pomeranian Governor on the construction of the terminal.

This investment is, at the same time, a key to the successive ventures that will substantially enhance the capacity of the Port of Gdansk and expand its business offer. These comprise the logistics and distribution centre situated in the Northern Port, in the hinterland of the container terminal. Forming a significant component of the terminal infrastructure, it will provide a vital link within the logistical chain along the route from the European Union countries to Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine.

It is worthwhile to emphasize that the provision of the logistics centre entails tangible benefits to the municipality of Gdansk. Besides the increased income brought as a result of commercial activity of a wide range of businesses operating in the city centre, there will be a boost in employment opportunities available on the job market in Gdansk.

Resulting in the provision of the container terminal along with the logistics and distribution centre, the co-operation between the City of Gdansk, the Port of Gdansk Authority SA and DCT Gdansk SA represents a good example of a highly efficient international collaboration, the beneficiaries of which also include the citizens of Gdansk.
