New container line at the Port of Gdansk05.08.2003 Friday, August 1, saw a first calling of the ship mv Petsamo, part of a new regular container service operated by a Finnish shipowner Containerships Oy Ltd. The vessel is to call at Gdansk every Thursday on route Gdansk - Aarhus* - Helsinki - Gdansk (* calling at Aarhus subject to sufficient cargo loads). During its first voyage to Gdansk, the ship brought 45 containers of 40' HC (High Cube) type. Servicing the ship commenced at 9.30 a.m. and at about 11 a.m. the vessel departed from the port.
Vessels maintained by Containerships service the routes chiefly on the Baltic and the North Sea. Throughout the whole Europe the shipowner runs its own canvassing agencies. As part of its business, Containerships provides clients with comprehensive door-to-door transportation services and arranges cargo haulage from the place of consigning directly to the consignee. The shipowner has containers at its disposal, mainly containers of the width suited for convenient loading of euro-trays. These containers are slightly wider than those of standard dimensions. The largest containers (Magnum) facilitate loading of up to 33 euro-trays (while the longest vehicles - 34 euro-trays).
Initially, the new container line is to be serviced by mv Petsamo, whereas in future, as the service develops, the shipowner will consider employing larger vessels. The shipowner's agent in Gdansk is Cargo Service Ltd.
