New straddle carrier at the Gdansk Container Terminal

25.01.2002

The Gdansk Container Terminal has acquired a new machine that will enable even more efficient servicing of containers. Purchased by the Port of Gdansk Cargo Logistics Ltd., a new straddle carrier will facilitate a wider and more versatile range of services that include the storing and handling of containers at the terminal, as well as in the yard of 1.8 ha situated beyond the yard overhead traveling cranes. So far, this area has been mainly used as a storing grounds for empty containers due to a shortage of suitable machines necessary for the handling of containers with cargo, in particular the 40-feet-containers.

The carrier has been adjusted for the storing of 20-feet and 40-feet containers laid in two layers (the third layer being a mobile layer) and enables the servicing of vehicles, rolltrailers, rail cars, as well as the transportation between the stands.

The carrier is nearly 13 meters high with the lifting capacity of 40 tons beneath the spreader. It is equipped with two 135 kW engines. Under the full load it reaches a speed of 26 km/h, which, combined with high maneuvering ability, will result in great operating efficiency of the machine. The carrier had been manufactured by Kalmar Industries Oy Finland.
