Newly launched ro-ro service at the Port of Gdansk

26.11.2002

On November 24, this year at the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal a call of a ro-ro vessel launched a new regular service on the route Gdansk - Kiel - Bremerhaven - Kiel - Turku - Muuga - Gdansk. The vessel of "Traden" is owned by Mann Lines, a British shipowner with over 50 years of experience. The contract that provided for opening the service line to Gdansk had been signed on November 22, this year by the shipowner's representatives, as well as the Port of Gdansk Authority SA. The 129.2 meters long and 19.3 meters wide vessel with a capacity of 8 188 DWT is scheduled to call at the Port of Gdansk on weekly basis, every Sunday.

This is yet another regular service that takes advantage of the potential of the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal equipped with a permanent ro-ro ramp with a sliding bridge with a hydraulic drive. Additionally, available at the terminal there are storage grounds and maneuvering yards. All the facilities have an excellent transportation link to national and international road networks, inclusive of the Gdansk - Warsaw express road. The new service at the Westerplatte Ferry Terminal will join the ferry connection to Trelleborg and Copenhagen that has been successfully operating for the last few weeks.

The newly launched service confirms an increasingly important role of short sea shipping on the Baltic Sea and is a sign that foreign business partners are fully aware of the expansion capacity of Polish economy at the threshold of the EU accession. The service not only provides the first regular connection to the Estonian port, but also contributes to closer business co-operation with Finland and Germany.
