Port of Gdansk exhibition for the residents and tourists

Among the many sites that afford close observation of Gdansk port's daily operations, the Ziolkowski Quay is particularly quant and attractive. It is located at the foot of the Pilots' Hill where 120 years ago a lighthouse was built and is now recognized as one of the most beautiful in Northern Poland. Thanks to the efforts taken by the Port of Gdansk Authority, the quay was reconstructed and partly remodelled in the past decade to create a recreational waterfront boulevard, which provides the venue for a special outdoor exhibition entitled "Today and Through the Ages" organized by the Port of Gdansk.

The premiere presentation of the port's history is comprised of 100 photographs and images divided into three parts illustrating the history of the development of the port in Gdansk from the tenth century until the present day. Part one presents the historic port situated at the curve of the Motlawa River, with drawings and prints showing methods of cargo handling, most frequently shipped goods and historic vessels. This part is concluded with the remembrance of World War 2, with archive photographs reflecting the immense destruction of port infrastructure. Part two shows the contemporary history of the port, especially the construction of the Northern Port which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Another set of photographs illustrates the transformation process of port facilities showing their historic images as well as their present operations.

"The Port of Gdansk - We Build History" is a story written with the pen of Professor Andrzej Januszajtis and illustrated with drawings and prints from the collection of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the National Museum in Gdansk and the Central Maritime Museum, and with archive photographs taken by Zbigniew Kosycarz and contemporary aerial photographs taken by Kacper Kowalski.

The venue can be easily reached by car or by public trams and busses. Additionally, the waterfront boulevard at the Ziolkowski Quay is the endpoint of the most attractive cycling routes in the Tricity. There is a path along the beach running almost all the way to Gdynia and leading through the recently revitalized Jean Jacque Haffner Park in Brzezno towards the Polferries Terminal and the Ziolkowski Quay. This is where all ships pass by entering the inner part of the Gdansk Port. We believe that the Port of Gdansk outdoor exhibition will greatly add to the attractiveness of the tourist season in Gdansk.
