Project cargo at the Port of Gdansk11.05.2009 Project cargo services offer comprehensive tailor-made solutions in terms of logistics and technology for the shipment of oversized and heavy machinery that often requires disassembly at the time of shipment. It calls for excellent rapport between manufacturers and carriers due to the rising prices of machinery that is built mainly for the purposes of refinery, chemical and power industry. The engineering challenge, therefore, is exacerbated by the financial risk. On 11 May this year, another such extraordinary unloading was performed at the Oliwskie Quay in the Port of Gdansk. M/v "Traveller", which is specialized in shipping project cargo units, brought a total of 650 tonnes of reactor parts, of which the heaviest weighting 329.2 tonnes. Supervised by the Gdynia-based company "Port Consultants" with a solid experience in the handling of such cargo, the unloading services were provided by the stevedores of Port of Gdansk Cargo Logistics. Using two floating cranes with a lifting capacity of 275 tonnes each, the load was placed on a pontoon. Taking advantage of good weather conditions, it will be floated up the Vistula river to a construction site in Wloclawek. This operation was successfully carried out thanks to the growing experience of the operator's personnel and the efficient cooperation with the forwarder. It is even more important as project cargo is becoming increasingly popular in the shipping practice. The slogan "Port of Gdansk - for all cargo" has found its direct application in practice. |
