Science to benefit industry - industry to benefit science

15.04.2013

Close relations between Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) and the seaport in Gdansk have been maintained since... time immemorial as GUT graduates have frequently found employment in port operating companies. However, the heads of both organisations have decided that it is necessary to invigorate this cooperation, which called for certain legal regulations to be put in place. Consequently, on 12 April 2013, Professor Henryk Krawczyk PhD (Eng), Rector of GUT together with Jerzy Melaniuk acting as PGA SA sole director Board, signed an agreement which constitutes a framework contract reactivating the mutual relations. Its intention, among the other goals, is to support research and development projects implemented by Gdansk University of Technology to the benefit of the Gdansk port. At the same time, it is set to bring about changes in the educational system of potential future employees through adding to the curriculum specialized practical knowledge of the maritime economy. This purpose will be best served by Gdansk University of Technology offering a series of lectures given by PGA employees in conjunction with TUG faculty staff, as was the case with the University of Gdansk.

Further plans include geological, hydrological and environmental research with regard to the development plans of port infrastructure in the Gulf of Gdansk, developing methods, construction technology and maintenance of transmission grids, strengthening of canal and port basins bed, corrosion preventive measures and operation of a great variety of port infrastructure facilities. A wide-ranging educational programme offered by TUG may also help provide a conceptual design for an IT platform to serve the purposes of PGA SA and port companies operating on its premises.

It will also pave the way for returning to a well-tested formula of study visits and professional training implemented under the guidance of highly experienced port workers.
