The biggest ever container vessel at DCT

22.12.2009

Despite the fact that there are still two weeks left before the arrival date of the first direct deep-sea service liner operated under the Gdansk-Shanghai container service, another important event already took place in Gdansk at DCT last Friday. 18 December 2009 saw the arrival of the biggest so far container vessel, Santa Carolina, at the Deepwater Container Terminal, bringing the load of over 700 containers and carrying out from Gdansk just as many. The Maersk-owned vessel docked at the DCT terminal on Friday late afternoon and it set out for the return voyage to Bremerhaven upon the completion of handling operations the following day.

From the beginning of this year until the end of November, DCT terminal has handled nearly 150,000 TEU's, which amounts to a 70 percent increase year-on-year. Neither of the container terminals located in the Polish ports can currently boast such rapid growth.

The DCT forecasts for the next year look even more optimistic. The direct deep-sea container service from Shanghai to Gdansk, with its first call scheduled for early January 2010, is a breakthrough on the Baltic scale. As emphasized by DCT CEO Boris Wenzel, this is not just a minor detail, but an event of major significance to Poland. This event is set to change the status of the Gdansk port and its role in the container shipping on the Baltic Sea...
