The container terminal is taking increasingly larger shape

05.10.2006

Intensive construction work is in progress on the container terminal in the Northern Port. On 4 October this year, representatives of the investor - DCT Gdansk SA - organized a meeting to mark the half completion point of construction of the largest investment project in Poland's maritime economy.

As predicted by both the investor and the main contractor - Hochtief consortium - the construction work is advancing rapidly.
- In line with the adopted guidelines - says Richard Times, President of DCT Gdansk SA - the first container carriers will be handled at the new terminal in June 2007, while the remaining work is due to be completed by October 2007.

At the moment, a massive pier, which will accommodate container ships, has been half-completed. As assured by the Hochtief representatives, the work on filling the pier structure with sand acquired from dredging the waterway will have been completed by the end of this year.

It is worth keeping in mind that the construction work on the container terminal has coincided with preliminary work to provide a large logistics and distributions centre on the area of approx. 130 ha adjacent to the terminal. A Letter of Intent has already been signed, stipulating that the centre be a joint venture of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA, the City of Gdansk, the company of DCT Gdansk SA and the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone Ltd. The project's ownership structure makes it highly attractive for investors to locate their investment projects in this specific zone. It is expected that the first investment projects in the logistics and distribution centre will commence in 2007.
