The Gdansk Port on the top

14.08.2012

The worldwide interest is rising in the opportunity of cooperation with the Gdansk Port. Unusual in the maritime transport, the exceptionally rapid growth in the turnovers of DCT - a container terminal in the deepwater part of the Gdansk port, accessible also in severe winter conditions - has frequently provided the evidence that each of the official visits undertaken by PGA SA may herald new opportunities in terms of trade exchange and investment projects.

The year 2011, regardless of the worldwide trade crisis, saw the Port of Gdansk attain the fourth best result in its history: 25.3 million tonnes of goods handled. Despite the slowdown in goods exchange that can be observed all across the European seaports, the Gdansk port continues to provide 11 regular services connecting it with 15 countries: 7 container lines (an ocean-going service included), 3 general cargo lines for Ro-Ro and passenger traffic, passenger cars and conventional bulk cargo, and a line for bulk cargo. In addition to "Maersk Line" - the regular shipping services are operated by "Euro Marine Logistics NV", "Mibau", Polferries, "Seaway Logistics", "Team Lines", "Team Lines / CMA CGM" and "Unifeeder".

As a result of the PGA SA negotiations, the construction work was commenced last year on the Gdansk Bulk Terminal at the Bytomskie Quay (implemented by "Malteurop Polska" Ltd and opening up great opportunities for farmers in the Pomeranian Region) and on the Frozen Fish Storage in the Port Free Zone (the investment by the "North Atlantic Producers' Organisation" providing frozen fish storage facilities on three levels and taking up an area of 7 thousand sq. metres), and also on the expansion of the "Northern Port" cargo handling facilities (implemented with the financial guarantees from the Belgian group "Sea-Invest").
Furthermore, the Gdansk port is also planning on the expansion of its deepwater cargo handling facilities - including the one suited to handling containers - which will enable further growth of distribution operations in the Baltic Sea region.
The port's rapid growth and its rising significance is seconded by a wide range of investment projects, such as the construction of a PERN terminal for petroleum and its derivatives, or the accompanying projects, such as the construction of the A1 motorway together with a channel under the Dead Vistula River, as well as the Pomeranian Logistics Centre.

In view of the above, the visitors form the Republic of Kazakhstan, who visited the port on Friday 10 August 2012, may also initiate new chapters in the history of the Gdansk port. It was one of the first visits paid by Yerik Utembayev who headed the delegation upon his appointment to the post of the Ambassador and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Poland. The talks held with PGA SA President of the Board Dr. Ryszard Strzyzewicz and with PGA SA Director for International Cooperation, Marketing and Promotion Julian Skelnik highlighted both the need of and the opportunities for close cooperation.
