The Missile Ship Squadron on a visit to the Gdansk port

17.12.2009

On 15 December 2009, the Gdansk port hosted the Missile Ship Squadron of the Republic of Poland, comprised of three ships: ORP "Metalowiec", ORP "Rolnik" and ORP "Orkan". The ships docked at the Cpt. Ziolkowski Quay, which is open to the public.

The ships' visit to the Gdansk port is part of the Baltic maneuvers scenario. The ships' crew members had an opportunity to improve their skills at a port different from their port of registry. The following day, the division left the Gdansk port and proceeded with other exercises, such as mock missile attacks, surveillance of operational situation in the water region and ship's damage control.

The Missile Ship Squadron is part of the 3rd Ships Flotilla. Its assignments include such tasks as missile assaults on enemy forces, defence of own ships and crafts from attacks and patrolling sea transport routes.

ORP "Metalowiec" and ORP "Rolnik" number among the fastest crafts on the Baltic Sea reaching a speed of 43 knots. They are propelled by four gas turbines and their armament comprises of four anti-ship missile launchers fitted with radar target acquisition system and supplemented with infra-red, and an anti-aircraft missile launcher with four launch ramp lanes. They are also fitted with heavy artillery armament. ORP "Orkan" is one of the most advanced ships of its class on the Baltic. Its armament and equipment include missiles, combat system and radar fire detection and control systems. The ship's defence relies on artillery systems and an anti-aircraft missile launcher.
