The Port of Gdansk awarded a Public Tender Crystal

24.10.2016

On 10 October 2016, the Public Tender Crystals were awarded for the 8th time. The awards go to companies which, according to the competition board, apply good and exemplary public procurement practices.

The small circle of previous winners was joined by the Port of Gdansk Authority SA, which received the award in the category of "Investments contributing to the improvement of road and communication infrastructure" for the expansion of the intermodal container terminal in the area of the Szczecinskie Quay at the Port of Gdansk using the design-build system.

Only projects completed between 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016 were taken into consideration for this year's edition of the competition.

The investment that received the award serves the improvement of the technology and quality of service at the container terminal in the area of the Szczecinskie Quay. It was completed at the end of last year. The investment amounted to PLN 30 million and was carried out with the support of EU funds from the Infrastructure and Environmental Operational Programme.

The project covered a broad scope of work, including enlargement of the storage area, enhancement of the traffic system and parking zones at the terminal, improvement of the water and sewage management system covered by the investment. In spite of the wide spectrum of project-related tasks, the investment was completed very quickly - in just 7 months. Construction work lasted from April to November 2015. The work resulted in an improvement in the quality of the conditions the road-sea, rail-road-sea, and rail-sea transport services in terms of unit turnaround time at the terminal. In the course of the investment, appropriate improvements to the container handling and storage facilities were made. As a result, the terminal modernisation programme made it possible to increase its annual throughput capacity up to 100,000 TEU.

The Competition Board assessed the entire tender procedure - from its announcement, through the selection of the best offer, to the completion of the project in compliance with the law and with respect for public funds.

The winners were selected from among 187 submissions by the Award Board, comprised of recognised experts - authorities in the field of public procurement. The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Ministry of Development, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Road and Bridge Research Institute. Michal Zarski, Head of the Public Tender and Contracts Department, accepted the award on behalf of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA.
