The sailors will be able to go ashore freely

23.09.2005

The Polish ports, including the port of Gdansk, are becoming more open to non-EU sailors calling at Polish ports.

The Regulation of the Minister of Home Affairs and Administration under which sailors from merchant ships entering Polish ports will be issued passes allowing them to move freely within the administrative borders of the port town enters into force on October 1st. The pass issued by the Commander of the Border Guard Post in Gdansk will be valid for 15 days and it will be possible to extend its validity. The pass will be issued free of charge on the basis of a passport or a sailor's document by border guard officers during the border clearing of the ship.

"It is a very significant change of the regulations in force", says Major Bogdan Grandicki, Commander of the Border Guard Post in Gdansk. "Before it becomes effective sailors from many countries need to apply for a visa, which costs PLN 300, to be able to go ashore."

The passes will not be issued to persons who are featured on the list of unwanted foreigners or persons staying in Poland for purposes other than declared.
