Throughput hits a record high growth at DCT Gdansk

07.10.2010

If the DCT Gdansk's throughput rates attained in September can also be repeated over the last three months of 2010, the container shipping market on the Baltic Sea will never question the leading position of the Port of Gdansk. The deepwater container terminal DCT Gdansk, which has only been operational for three years now, handled in September a record high volume of 47,153 TEUs, thus exceeding the total throughput of both container terminals in Gdynia.

In view of the rising interest in Gdansk-based DCT observed amongst the shipping experts combined with the rapid development of the teminal's throughput capacity, we can realistically expect a year-on-year tripple growth in the turnovers. Given the current infrastructure, the volume of 450,000 TEUs bodes well for the targeted annual throughput capacity of 1 million TEUs. The superb location, which makes it possible for the port to accommodate all-year-round the biggest vessels navigating the Baltic Sea coupled by the fast top quality services ensured by the use of state-of-the-art handling equipment and well-skilled staff, is a guarantee of DCT's successful operation and further record high outcome. The easy access to the quays dominated by three post-Panamax gantry cranes, a 1,000-metre long rail sidetrack, the newly-built Border Veterinary Inspection Post located in the close-vicinity and increasingly efficient transportation links with the hinterland are the major arguments encouraging cooperation of potential business partners. Following Maersk, also other world-renown container operators such as Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, Cosco, China Shipping, ZIM, Hyundai, MOL, K-line, UASC and Evergreen have placed their hopes for successful business with DCT. As a result, all companies exporting or importing goods from the Baltic Sea region have become the shareholders of the only container hub situated east of Denmark. With their success in mind - in addition to the weekly AE10 container service to the Far East - the Gdansk-based DCT Terminal operates regular liner services to Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Aarhus, and also to Helsinki, Kotka, Saint Petersburg, Kaliningrad and Baltiysk.

Funding the construction of DCT, the Autralian fund of Macquarie Group has undoubtedly made good business with the Port of Gdansk.
