We build history24.06.2011 It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the Port of Gdansk Authority SA exhibition called "The Port of Gdansk - We Build History" that will be held at the Central Maritime Museum from 25 June until the end of August of this year. This exhibition is the summary of the history of the Port of Gdansk and its achievements from its presumed foundation in the year 980 until the present time. Visitors will have the opportunity to examine the port's development throughout the last eleven centuries; technological advances in cargo handling, types of goods that were shipped via Gdansk, vessels accommodated at the port and its changing location, which once used to be in the crescent of the Motlawa river, at the crossroads of today's Podwale Staromiejskie and the streets of Grodzka and Sukiennicza. "Port of Gdansk - We Build History" is a fascinating story written by the hand of Professor Andrzej Januszajtis and illustrated with drawings derived from the collection of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the National Museum in Gdansk and the Central Maritime Museum, and also with photographs taken by e.g. Zbigniew Kosycarz and Kacper Kowalski, as well as with contemporary and archive photographs from the collection of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA. The exhibition commemorates the milestones in the history of the Port of Gdansk, including the outbreak and aftermath of World War 2 illustrated by the archive photographs showing the images of the war's destruction that regrettably also affected the port facility. On display there are also photographs presenting the construction of the Northern Port, one of the biggest ever investment projects, now celebrating the 40th anniversary of its foundation.
In total, there are 145 drawings, paintings and photographs on display, which will draw the attention of not only sea enthusiasts, but also all residents of the Tricity (Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia) who are welcome to take this opportunity and explore the best part of the history of the Port of Gdansk and the city in an engaging and accessible way. There will be a wealth of attractions awaiting visitors, further details given on the local Tricity website trojmiasto.pl, the media sponsor of the exhibition. On behalf of the Port of Gdansk Authority SA, we invite you to join us on this fascinating journey back in time.
