DCT has handled its millionth container in 201318.11.2013 We got used to hearing about the successive record-breaking achievements of the Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) in Gdansk, with great significance to Poland’s economy. Consequently, historians dealing with the development of shipping and seaports in Poland will make a note of the date 15th November 2013. On this day, DCT – while handling the second arrival of Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller, the world’s largest container ship and the first in Triple-E class owned by Maersk Line – handled its millionth container in this year.
The first container-carrier called at DCT Gdansk in 2007. Since January 2010, the terminal each week has received vessels loading 8,000 20-feet containers at one time. Shortly after the giant ships with a carrying capacity of 13,000 TEU had been introduced to the AE-10 service, already in May 2011, DCT started to accommodate E-class container ships loading 15,500 TEU. 21st August of this year marked the arrival at DCT of Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller with a 18,200 TEU capacity on her maiden voyage from the Far East.
The calls made by ocean-going container ships have confirmed the “geographical rent” offered by the Port of Gdansk. Less than 6 years of DCT operation proved enough for the terminal to become a deep-sea hub for inbound and outbound container services covering Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the container gateway to Poland and the Baltic states. Along with the setting up of DCT, Polish import and export companies gained a reliable business partner providing the highest international quality of service. Last year’s growth and throughput rates evaluation provided the British “Container Management” magazine with the basis for nominating Gdansk to become a member of the prestigious circle of “World’s top 100 container ports”. Today’s achievement has justified this nomination. DCT quayside water depth coupled with convenient and safe approach to the port and prospective expansion plans of container throughput capacity enable Gdansk to further its advanced shipping model and strengthen its position in the Baltic Sea.
